My wife raises her eyebrows as I brake and signal a left turn.
I shrug. “Driver’s Choice.”
It’s what keeps peace in our car.
After decades of driving in Boston, we each have our own favorite roads. Driver’s Choice simply means that the driver chooses the route.
And it gets me thinking about your Elevator Pitch.
Because my wife and I optimize for different things when we’re taking a shortcut.
Here are my top 3:
- Consistency: I want a route that takes roughly the same amount of time every day. Unpredictable back roads that grind to a halt for 15 minutes? Not for me.
- Fewer Turns: I find too many turns stressful, so I prefer longer stretches on the same road. Fewer turns mean less decision making and a smoother ride.
- No Multiple Light Cycles: I can handle sitting at a light for one cycle. Maybe two. But three or more? I’ll switch to a different route.
This comes up a lot now as we search for the best route to my daughter’s new high school.
The trip with the fewest turns has zero consistency – sometimes it takes 30 minutes. Sometimes it takes 55. Adding insult to injury, there are two intersections where you can get stuck for six to 10 light cycles.
The trip with dozens of turns always takes about 35 minutes.
For me, consistency always wins out.
Driver’s choice.
And just as I design my commute around my preferences, you can design your business around yours.
As a starting point, here’s how I streamline my business:
- 50% deposit before I do any work: This ensures commitment, sets a professional tone, and means that I never have to chase people for money.
- Run free, public, virtual workshops: These build trust, provide value up-front, and let people experience working with me before they sign up.
- Offer free Perfect Pitch Consultations: This is where potential clients get a glimpse of the power of transforming their Elevator Pitch.
Like with driving, you get to decide the route.
