Not Surprised

I want to surprise my daughter so I don’t tell her that I’ll be doing a presentation at her school.

I enter the auditorium and sneak up behind her and tap her on the shoulder.

She wheels around and her face lights up.

“I knew you were coming” she says gleefully as she throws her arms around me.

So much for the surprise.

In fact, she seemed most pleased that she had figured it out – that she had known that I would be there.

And it gets me thinking about your Elevator Pitch.

Because the buzz at her school that day was that Rotary was coming to give out trees for Arbor Day.

And to her, Rotary means me.

Rotary isn’t the only thing I do.

It probably isn’t even the strongest part of my identity.

But for my fourth grade daughter, Rotary means Daddy.

So much for the surprise.

But I did get a good lesson in marketing.

What are you known for?

What phrase needs to be said so that people start looking around for you?

What situation causes people to be certain that you are about to walk through the door?

That’s when you know your Elevator Pitch is working!

Want to get better at describing what you do? Turn to page 29 in the Elevator Pitch Handbook, or set up a complimentary 30 minute phone call.
