My driving instructor’s smile evaporates as I release the clutch and carefully ease out of my 3-point turn.
We both feel the jolt.
The guy in the other car is already striding towards us.
He announces that he’s an insurance adjuster, and meaningfully points to the rust in the rear wheel well of his car.
I’m a kid with only a few hours behind the wheel, but even at 16 I know that’s not how rust works.
“Call the police!” he demands.
I’m understandably nervous, but it’s about to get even stranger.
The cop pulls up and rolls down his window.
“Hey Bob” my driving instructor says cheerfully.
“Joe!” the cop smiles. “What’s going on?”
My instructor, now completely relaxed, explains “Well, Bob, tell me this – if you were driving and saw a student driver in the middle of a 3-point turn, would you let him finish, or speed up and try to sneak by?”
Bob pauses for a beat, nods, and says “I think I’d let him finish.”
By the time I turn around, the insurance adjuster has jumped back in his car and is speeding off.
As we climb back into our car, I can’t help but ask, “How do you know the cop?”
Joe grins. “I used to work at the 7-11. The cops came in all the time.”
And it gets me thinking about your Elevator Pitch.
Because networking works in mysterious ways.
Who could’ve guessed that a convenience store job would come to the rescue of a nervous driver’s ed student?
I’m thankful that what could have been a huge headache turned into nothing more than a funny story – and now, decades later, a powerful reminder of the value of networking.
You never know who might have the right connection when you need it most.
So, the next time you find yourself in a tight spot or facing an unexpected challenge, take a moment to think about your network.
Who’s out there that might just have your back when you least expect it?
Your network is stronger and more valuable than you think!
