The Day My Pitch Snaps into Focus

“Dad, Andy can’t read the eye chart!”

I’m in second grade and my dad has brought home a doctor’s kit.

So now I’m sitting across from the optician at the Chestnut Hill Mall.

He perches my new glasses on my nose, I push back my chair and turn to the right.

Across the mall, the Spencer Gifts sign comes into focus – clear, sharp, and blazingly bright.

I’m mesmerized.

And, decades later, it gets me thinking about your Elevator Pitch.

Because your pitch should be a clear beacon – visible across the room and just as compelling.

Getting glasses sharpened my world.

Many decades later I have a similar experience with my Elevator Pitch.

I’m sitting across from a lawyer client, and as we wrap up his pitch I ask him my usual marketing question.

“Do you mind me asking the top three reasons you decided to hire me?”

He only has one.

“Because you’re an Elevator Pitch Coach, and I needed help with my elevator pitch.”

I nearly fall out of my chair.

Up to that point I had never called myself an Elevator Pitch Coach…

But I have ever since.

That phrase lit up like that Spencer Gifts sign.

It snapped everything into focus.

And just like getting my glasses, I could suddenly see what had been right in front of me all along.

When you find the right words – the ones that instantly bring your work into focus – your business gets sharper, brighter, and a whole lot easier to find.

Because clarity isn’t just about you seeing your message clearly. It’s about helping everyone else see it too.

  1. Thanks Alan! Remember that it’s not about reaching the most people – it’s about reaching the right people!

  2. Nice story, Andy! Yours is an enviable brand. I have my doubts about ever reaching that kind of recognition. So far, Square Peg Financial Advisory Services is essentially, “I yam what I yam, and that’ all that I yam.” Looking forward to our next live conversation. I hope it’s not too far off.
