The Networking Formula: Schedule Meetings at Events
Here’s the simple rule of thumb:
📍 For every networking event you attend, expect to schedule two follow-up 1:1 meetings the following week.
That means if you go to 7 events in a week, you’re looking at 14 follow-ups next week. Do you have time for that?
If so—fantastic! You’ve found a rhythm that works.
If not, it’s time to pare down your networking commitments and focus on the events that bring you the best connections.
How to Use the Networking Calculator
- Count your weekly events. Enter the number of networking events you attend in an average week.
- Click on the big green Calculate button. That shows you the expected number of 1:1’s you’ll schedule for next week.
- Check your availability. Do you have enough open slots on your calendar for those meetings while still getting your work done?
- Adjust accordingly. If the numbers don’t work, prioritize the events that lead to the best quality 1:1’s.
Fix Your Pitch
If you’re not averaging at least two 1:1 meetings from each event, the problem may not be the events—it may be your pitch. The more specific you are about who you want to meet, the easier it is for people to run up to you with quality introductions. When you’re clear about who you help and how, you’ll attract better connections and schedule more meaningful 1:1’s.
Prioritize Events
Once you’ve fine-tuned your pitch, the next step is to prioritize the events that generate the best quality 1:1’s. Not all networking groups are created equal—some will bring in better connections than others. Keep track of where your best meetings come from and double down on those events while cutting back on the ones that don’t produce results. The goal isn’t to attend the most events—it’s to focus on the right events.
The Right Balance for You
Networking isn’t about collecting business cards—it’s about building relationships. If you’re drowning in 1:1’s and struggling to keep up, you’re not making the most of your networking time. By fixing your pitch, prioritizing your events, and using this simple calculator, you can ensure that you’re networking strategically, staying engaged with the right people, and protecting your time for actually doing business.
