Will being too specific exclude potential clients?

What if your pitch excludes people that you could help?

This is the most common networking fear.

And then I think about a fractional CFO I worked with.

Her original pitch sounded like this:

“I help businesses with financial strategy and growth.”

Technically true.
Also completely forgettable.

So we tightened it.

“I do finance work for nonprofits”

She was hesitant.

“Won’t that exclude opportunities?”

Yes.

That’s the point.

Because at the very next networking event she attended, a nonprofit raised their hand.

“We’re a nonprofit and we need a finance person!”

And it gets me thinking about your Elevator Pitch.

In practice, being specific doesn’t exclude people.

It activates the right ones.

When you stay broad:

  • People nod
  • They smile
  • They forget

When you get specific:

  • People recognize
  • They connect
  • They refer

This happens in my own business, too

I call myself an Elevator Pitch Coach.

Could I say:

  • business coach
  • communication coach
  • sales trainer

Sure.

In fact, at one time or another, I’ve used them all.

But when I say Elevator Pitch Coach:

People instantly know:

  • who to introduce me to
  • when to refer me
  • why they would want to talk to me

And those conversations lead to more work in all areas of my coaching business.

Broad Feels Safe. Specific Gets Results.

Vague includes everyone… and triggers no one.

Specific excludes most people… and activates the right ones.
