Your Pitch Needs 50% More Gibberish

My daughter begs for help, and like a good parent I go stand next to her, knowing that at best I can offer a supportive smile and an occasional nod.

I am not a visual person so her Mandarin homework is complete gibberish to me.

And it gets me thinking about your Elevator Pitch.

Because when you first hear your professional pitch, it can sound like gibberish.

Here are some common reactions:

  • That feels so limiting
  • Won’t that scare people off?
  • That’s not what I usually say
  • I don’t want to pigeonhole myself
  • But I do so much more…

That’s okay. That’s the point.

When you stay specific about the problem you solve and the audience you solve it for, it finally makes sense to the people who need it most.

They see the logic.
They get the value.
They want to learn more.

It’s not about you – it’s about them!

Meanwhile, my daughter carefully listens to to some phrases to transcribe them.

“I actually know what they’re saying!”

What initially sounds like gibberish to you will make perfect sense to your ideal clients.

Your Turn!

Have people ever struggled to understand your pitch? What do you say to make it finally click?
